I’d hoped to spend the rest of the day hanging out with Nicole and Jackson, but I got a call from Les, my least favorite marketing rep for BlueSwell surfing brand. Our planned ten-minute call turned into a two-hour video conference, then they wanted to add in their Spanish marketing team and with the time difference, we had to wait until 8 p.m.

The only time I saw Jackson and Nicole for the rest of the night was when I ducked into the kitchen with my phone up to my ear to grab a slice of pizza from the table while they were playing peek-a-boo. I dropped a quick kiss on both their heads and mouthed “Sorry” to Nicole and rushed back to my office.

By the time I got off the phone, it was almost nine o’clock and I was exhausted. Les had told me again that if I blew the World Surfing Competition, my sponsorship deal was off, and he wanted to make sure I was totally focused on winning. I tried to convince him I was but when I thought back over this week, I had spent more time playing on the beach with Jackson and making love to Nicole than I had on my surfboard.

I walked down the hall to go find Nicole and apologize for being on the phone all this time but couldn’t find her anywhere. Until I walked past her bedroom and saw Jackson and her curled into a sweet little ball on the bed.

Jackson was lying on his side in the middle of the bed and Nicole was wrapped around him from the back, her arms cupped around him in such a protective, motherly way that my heart melted.

That feeling was quickly replaced by a lump in my stomach when I remembered how I was lying to her. I’d told Nicole I was going to a business meeting when it was really a personal meeting with my lawyer.

Very personal.

I wanted to tell her my secret, but I just couldn’t. Not yet. I wanted Nicole in my life for so many reasons, but this might be too much for her. And that would break my heart.
